Jan. 14, 2021: State Expands Vaccination to All Age 65+ and Those with Underlying Conditions

Gov. Murphy announced a major expansion of COVID-19 vaccination eligibility. Vaccines may be administered to all residents age 65 and older, along with those 16-64 who have an underlying health condition that makes them more vulnerable to coronavirus.

“We feel we can responsibly take this step, but please be patient,” the Governor advises residents.

Gov. Murphy and Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli provided the following additional details:

  • The eligible underlying conditions for those 16-64 are cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD, Down’s syndrome, heart conditions, obesity and severe obesity, sickle cell disease, type 2 diabetes and smokers.
  • Those who fall into these groups who are pregnant or immunocompromised are eligible but should talk first with their medical provider and follow CDC guidance.
  • Individuals must schedule vaccinations through the N.J. Vaccine Scheduling System or, for those sites not in the state system, directly with the vaccination site. That information is available on the state’s COVID-19 information hub. There will be no walk-ins at vaccination sites.
  • Residents, including those who pre-registered with NJVSS, will receive emails notifying them of vaccination appointments; more than 1.2 million people are already pre-registered.
  • Residents are not bound to get the vaccine in the municipality or county in which they live, but are encouraged to get both shots at one site.
