Jan. 18, 2018: CDC: Flu Season Ramping Up in New Jersey and Nationwide

New Jersey is among the states with high levels of flu activity in what is shaping up to be a “very active flu season,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald held a briefing today with the first “Flu View” update of 2018. The weekly surveillance report shows that 49 states are experiencing widespread flu activity, with Hawaii the lone exception. About half of the states, including New Jersey, report the highest levels of flu activity.

The overall hospitalization rate for this flu season – Oct. 1 through now – stands at 22.7 per 100,000 population. Seven influenza-related pediatric deaths have been reported.

The New Jersey Department of Health reminds providers that influenza is a laboratory reportable condition and should be reported within 24 hours. DOH’s Seasonal Influenza page provides both information for consumers and guidance for providers.

NJHA’s website features additional resources on seasonal flu, including short videos from the Prepare and Protect series that may be downloaded to promote precautions against the flu.
