May 9, 2016: Awards Program Honors Those Who Instill ‘Excellence in Medicine’


RWJBarnabas Health President and CEO Barry Ostrowsky received the Outstanding Healthcare Executive Award among several other honorees at the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards presented in Lawrenceville.

NJHA’s Betsy Ryan and Aline Holmes were on hand to honor the awardees.

Now in their 77th year, the awards are presented by the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Foundation and MDAdvantage Insurance Company. The program recognizes physicians, scientists and healthcare leaders “whose commitment to education, research and public service has significantly impacted the delivery of healthcare in New Jersey and around the world.”

Christopher Kosseff, retired president and CEO of Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care and a former NJHA Board member, was presented the Verice M. Mason Community Service Leader Award.

Other honorees included:

  • Sara Cuccurullo, MD, received the Outstanding Medical Educator Award. She is clinical professor, chair and residency program director at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center/JFK Medical Center. She also serves as medical director and vice president of JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute.
  • Robert Korngold, PhD, received the Outstanding Scientist Award. He is chairman of the Department of Research and chief of the Basic Research Division at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center.
  • Jean Anderson Eloy, MD, was presented the Edward J. Ill Physician’s Award. He is professor and vice chair of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
  • Anita Chopra, MD, received the Peter W. Rodino Jr. Citizen’s Award, presented to an individual or group that promotes health and well-being. She is director of the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging and professor and chair of the Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.

In addition, a special award was presented to the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, founders and sponsors of Holy Name Medical Center, for their service as champions of the sick, the underserved and others in need.
