Jan. 27, 2016: Weekend Storm Puts Strain on Blood Supply

This weekend’s storm has created a critical need for blood, resulting from the cancellation of dozens of blood drives throughout New Jersey. Donor rooms in hospitals and community blood centers were also closed during the storm.

Although hospitals reported sufficient supply to manage emergencies, the availability of blood and platelets soon became a concern. When blood products and platelets are not available, either because of weather-related or other events, New Jersey providers must rely on imported blood products from other states, along with intense follow-up campaigns to elicit donors. The ability for delivery companies to fly blood supplies into New Jersey also impacted the supply chain over the weekend.

Hospitals are encouraged to work with their staff and community partners to participate in local blood and platelet drives to ensure adequate blood inventories. More information on conducting a blood drive can be found on the Department of Health “Save 3 Lives” site.
