Feb. 20, 2014: Assembly Committee OKs Bill to Prioritize Power Restoration to Healthcare Facilities

NJHA testified today in support of legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Gary Schaer (D-Passaic) that would give restoration priority to healthcare facilities during prolonged power outages.

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, hospitals became beacons for the community when they needed shelter. We need this bill to make sure we can continue to provide quality care and emergency services to our residents during a declared state of emergency,” said NJHA Director of Emergency Preparedness Diane Anderson.

A-1071 unanimously passed the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee. The bill would require the Board of Public Utilities to adopt regulations requiring that electric public utility companies give priority to hospitals, assisted living facilities and nursing homes during a declared state of emergency when there is a power outage lasting longer than 24 hours.

The bill now awaits a vote by the full Assembly.
