Building Healthier Communities: County Profiles of the Community's Health, 2007 Edition
As part of NJHA's Building Healthier Communities initiative, this resource is produced every five years in 21 volumes (one for each of New Jersey counties). The 2007 edition will supersede previous updates of this resource that were released in 1995, 1997, and 2001. The 2007 County Profiles of the Community's Health provides a snapshot of the demographic and healthcare landscape of each county, using data from the U.S. Census; New Jersey Departments of Health, Human Services, Education, Labor, Law and Public Safety, and Environmental Protection; and many other government, state and community agencies. It includes current data on each county's population by:

  • Age and Gender;
  • Race and Ethnicity/Ancestry;
  • Ability to Speak English and Citizenship Status;
  • Households (by family type, race and income);
  • Income;
  • People and Families below Poverty Level;
  • Children on welfare programs.
  • Education;
  • Housing;
  • Labor Force;
  • Employment (by occupation, by industry); and,
  • Insurance (HMO penetration, Medicaid managed care enrollments, Medicare);
Also provided are data on major health indicators, including:

  • Mortality (YPLL, alcohol and drug-related, leading causes of death, Cancer);
  • Morbidity (infectious diseases, cancer, STDs, HIV/AIDS, persons with disabilities);
  • Maternal and child health (maternal and infant characteristics, birth rate, natality, infant mortality);
  • Prevention and access (WIC, Medicare prevention, ambulatory care sensitive conditions, healthcare facilities);
  • Environmental health (lead and radon); and,
  • Deviant behaviors (crime rates, arrests, offenses, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, substance abuse and treatments.
The county-level data is compared temporally (across time in each county and spatially (across county and state ay a single time). County-level data and rates are compared to the state averages to show the county's relative status in a wider spectrum. Fishbone diagrams, similar to those commonly used in quality improvement programs, present the entire county data in a single diagram; illustrate clear and visual presentation of the indicators, showing where significant deviations exist from the state's benchmarks; and magnify areas of problem that need improvement.

This resource provides a variety of data not routinely found in a single source and serves as an essential planning and benchmarking tool in hospitals' community health assessment process. The 2007 County Profiles of the Community's Health is a valuable reference and resource tool for executive hospital planners, community agencies and offices of public health and assists them in identifying their community needs and planning/implementing programs that address local health issues and improve the overall health status of their community's residents.
