Healthcare Interpreter Training Program for Bilingual Hospital Staff
Improving Effective Communication between Healthcare Providers and Patients Effective communication between the provider and patient is critical to ensure high quality care and patient safety. However, our population’s increasing diversity has significant implications for achieving these objectives, presenting barriers to effective communication with culturally diverse patients. Recognizing the critical importance of the issue, NJHA formed an Interpreter and Translation Services Task Force to review hospital services for deaf and hard of hearing and limited English proficiency patients and develop recommendations for improvement. Prompted by these recommendations, NJHA/HRET developed a curriculum for training bilingual hospital staff on medical interpretation.

NJHA/HRET Standardized Curriculum for Training Bilingual Hospital StaffNJHA/HRET’s standardized curriculum is designed to train bilingual hospital staff on medical interpretation and allow them to serve in dual roles within their working units, using a modified pre-validated curriculum following national standards and a collaborative model adopted from the University of Wisconsin. The curriculum includes principals of medical interpretation and cultural competency, offered in an 8-hour session using interactive case-based discussions, videotapes, role-playing and interviewing skills. The program has been piloted in six hospitals in the southern region of New Jersey with funding support from the N.J. Department of Health and Senior Services – Office of Minorities and Multicultural Health.

Future PlansThe regional pilot program in southern New Jersey is part of a larger plan to create a standard training structure and statewide ongoing training of hospital bilingual staff on medical interpretation. NJHA/HRET is now offering this training to a regional consortium of hospitals across the state.
