NJHA Institute for Quality and Patient Safety Areas
The NJHA ICU Collaborative is designed to improve patient safety and quality of care provided in critical care units. Participating hospitals work with national faculty and leading experts in critical care and patient safety, and with each other, over the course of one year focusing on several dimensions of care, including best practices in the identification and management of sepsis and best practices in end of life care, as well as reducing the incidence of ventilator associated pneumonia and central line bloodstream infections.

Expecting Success: Excellence in Cardiac Care Learning Network is funded by the
New Jersey Health Initiatives (NJHI) and is under the aegis of the NJHA Institute for Quality and Patient Safety. Ten New Jersey hospitals have been selected as grant recipients who will participate in this 24-month quality improvement program. The Project in New Jersey is modeled after the National Project: Expecting Success. Using a collaborative Learning Network of 10 hospitals around the state, this initiative will develop and disseminate quality improvement strategies, models and resources to improve cardiac care for African-American and Hispanic/Latino patients diagnosed with heart failure.
NJHA's Perinatal Collaborative was designed to help hospitals improve perinatal care. Participating hospitals work with leading experts in perinatal care and patient safety and with each other over the course of one year. They will focus on several dimensions of care including improving teamwork, communication and patient education. Participating hospitals will learn the principles of high reliability organizations and improvement strategies that can be applied to practices and systems to ensure that recommended care and information is delivered consistently to all patients.
The NJHA Pressure Ulcer Collaborative is designed to improve patient safety and the quality of care provided in all healthcare settings where the elderly might develop pressure ulcers. Participating hospitals work with national faculty and leading experts in pressure ulcers and patient safety, and with each other, over the course of one year focusing on several dimensions of care including assessment, prevention, staging, pressure relieving devices and nutrition.
The NJHQI is designed to help exchange the latest information on the New Jersey Hospital Quality Initiative. Participating hospitals will work with faculty and Quality Institute staff over the course of one year and share best practice protocols, ask questions and seek additional resources for use in performance improvement work.
The NJHA Rapid Response Teams Collaborative is designed to develop a Learning Network in New Jersey on Rapid Response Teams. Participants will communicate relevant issues, share best practice protocols, ask questions and seek additional resources for use in RRT performance improvement work. It is a network with other RRT and quality improvement staff.
AMRI helps to exchange the latest information on antimicrobial resistance and Foley catheters. Participating hospitals and healthcare facilities will work with faculty and NJHA Institute for Quality and Patient Safety staff over the course of one year and share best practice protocols. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions and seek additional resources for use in performance improvement work.
The NJHA Falls Initiative is designed to improve patient safety and the quality of care provided in all healthcare settings where patients and residents are at risk for falling and sustaining significant injury. Member organizations are supported with educational material, best practice resources and benchmarking data to enhance organizations’ abilities to create a safe, high quality patient care environment.

Institute for Quality and Patient Safety Objectives
This Web site provides valuable resources and opportunities for healthcare professionals to stay informed about quality and patient safety in all care settings in New Jersey. Among its objectives, the NJHA Institute for Quality and Patient Safety:
- Advocates and provides leadership for the ongoing improvement in the delivery of healthcare services and the enhancement of patient safety;
- Improves the performance of healthcare facilities in New Jersey in processes and outcomes of care as reflected in data related to various clinical quality indicators.
- Identifies and validates best practices in clinical practice and patient safety and sponsors educational forums designed to disseminate these practices;
- Identifies technologies and computerized information systems that can reduce the potential for error, thereby improving clinical outcomes and patient safety.
