NJHA Established Fund to Aid Tsunami Victims
February 3, 2006 In response to the numerous calls NJHA has received regarding assistance to the countries recently hit by the tsunami catastrophe, NJHA established a special fund for employees and friends of New Jersey hospitals to provide financial support to the victims of this tragedy.
The fund has been established in NJHA's nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation, the Health Research & Educational Trust of New Jersey (HRET). Contributions are
100 percent tax deductible and will be periodically distributed to the
American Red Cross and
Save the Children. Both of these organizations are being recognized internationally for the direct relief they are providing to these affected countries.
NJHA staff is already onboard and have pledged their support. If every hospital employee contributes just $10 on a quarterly basis we would raise nearly $6 million. Of course, we recognize that many hospitals have already begun efforts within their own communities and this effort should be seen only as a supplement to those efforts. Contributions are strictly voluntary and donations can be made in any amount.
NJHA was in contact with the American Hospital Association and in their discussions with the Red Cross, because of local transportation logistical issues, there is consensus that financial support is the primary need right now in order to begin the rebuilding process. Certainly there are other needs such as medication, medical equipment and supplies, water, food and clothing, but at this time, financial support is the greatest necessity.
