Sept. 09, 2019: NJHA and its members believe a candid conversation on health equity & unconscious bias is important to ensure good health

About 150 healthcare professionals and community leaders gathered at NJHA for the Patients, Prejudice & Policy conference, a frank and thought-provoking discussion about implicit bias and its impact on health in our state.

The event featured First Lady Tammy Murphy discussing racial disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes, author and speaker Tony Chatman leading audience members through unconscious bias and New Jersey Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal discussing the embedded institutional biases that can create inequities in care. The daylong event also included several panel discussions featuring patients and family members, community organizations and lawmakers.

The first lady discussed the Nurture NJ initiative aimed at reducing racial disparities in birth outcomes, citing stories of women of color whose voices have not been heard by their clinicians and caregivers.
