Sept. 20, 2018: NJHA to Host Oct. 4 Program on Patient and Family Advisory Councils

Patient and family advisory councils are invaluable resources for hospitals to help enhance the quality and safety of care, strengthen community relationships and improve the patient experience. NJHA will explore issues in implementing these valuable councils at the program “Patient and Family Advisory Councils Bootcamp: Metric Four” Oct.4 at the NJHA Conference and Event Center.

This program, part of the Hospital Improvement Innovation Network, is intended to assist hospital staff who are responsible for implementing a patient and family advisory council. The seven-hour working session will address hands-on, step-by-step planning, resulting in a completed work plan for taking the necessary steps to begin implementing a council. Participants will work together to assess a hospital’s readiness, develop plans for creating buy-in across the hospital, identify and select patient and family advisors and begin the process of preparing both the hospital and the advisors for effective advisory council operations.

In addition to improving care and the patient experience, engaging patients and families can improve job satisfaction for staff and clinicians and improve a facility’s standing in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores.
