Richard P. Miller, President and CEO, Virtua Health
Richard P. Miller is the President/CEO of Virtua Health, a multi-hospital healthcare system headquartered in Marlton, New Jersey. Virtua was formed in 1998 by the merger of two health systems. Since then, Miller has led the system in innovative directions by creating a values-based culture known as the Star Initiative, applying performance improvement tools throughout the organization including Six Sigma and Lean, creating a learning lab environment, partnering with industry leaders such as GE, and transforming a group of community-based hospitals into technologically advanced regional medical centers. It is one of the most financially stable hospitals in the state of New Jersey. As a result, Virtua has become an international model for effective healthcare management and has served as host to both domestic and international healthcare organizations that want to replicate Virtua’s success. Virtua is now in the process of building a $400 million state-of-the-art digital hospital and ambulatory centers to provide patients with easy access to a wide range of health and wellness services. Under Miller’s leadership, Virtua has been honored twice with the New Jersey Governor’s Award for Clinical Excellence (Bronze in 2005; Silver in 2006) and recognized with the Leadership Award for Outstanding Achievement by Voluntary Hospitals of America. Virtua has been honored twice as the #1 Best Employer in the Delaware Valley by the Philadelphia Business Journal and is the recipient of the 2006/2007/2008 Consumer Choice Award by National Research Corporation.
Miller joined the former West Jersey Health System in 1986 as Vice President of Finance. He was later named President and CEO and in 1998, led the merger of West Jersey and Memorial Health Alliance to form Virtua Health. Following the merger, he led the integration of two boards, the creation of a physicians’ council, and the integration of operations.
A graduate of Mount St. Mary’s College, Miller earned his MBA from Southern Illinois University. He serves on the board of the National Committee for Quality Healthcare and most recently served on the subcommittee for Benchmarking for Efficiency and Quality of the New Jersey Governor’s Commission on Rationalizing Healthcare Resources. He is Chairman of the Board of the New Jersey Hospital Association and serves on the Johnson & Johnson – Wharton School Advisory Board. A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Miller is a past president of the Southern New Jersey Chamber of Commerce. He has been honored with the Medical Executive Award by the New Jersey Academy of Medicine, the Senior Careerist Award by the American College of Healthcare Regents, the YMCA’s Gilmour Leadership Award for Community Service, the Good Neighbor Award from the Camden County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Man of the Year Award from the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of Healing the Children, and Humanitarian of the Year by the Arthritis Foundation of New Jersey.
