Health Sciences Libraries Group Licensing Initiative

Revised: May 12, 2009
Contents:
Sixth Year of Group Licensing a Success; Year Seven Underway

Introduction:

The Group Licensing Initiative for New Jersey medical libraries is now in its seventh year. Beginning July 1, this service expanded and was enhanced for 2009-2010 to include thousands of full-text electronic journals, online books, bibliographic databases and point-of-care resources and tools from six vendors: Ovid Technologies, EBSCO Information Services, McGraw Hill's AccessMedicine and AccessSurgery, Teton Data System's STAT!Ref, New England Journal of Medicine's site licensing and the publishers British Medical Journal and LexisNexis. Participants realize a savings of 10 to 80 percent.

More than seventy nonprofit hospital and health sciences libraries are currently participating
from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware consortia. The four Pennsylvania library consortia include DEVIC Delaware Valley Information Consortium, CPHSLA Central Pennsylvania Health Sciences Library Association, HILNNEP Health Information Libraries Network of Northeast Pennsylvania and the CHL Cooperating Hospital Libraries in Lancaster. Delaware includes DelMIRA, the Delaware Medical Information Resource Alliance administered by the Delaware Academy of Medicine.

This initiative is offered by the Health Sciences Library Association of New Jersey and led by the NJHA Library and the University Libraries of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Licensing of Ovid resources, New England Journal of Medicine, BMJ and Lexis are available throughout the year at a pro-rated basis. All other licenses close on May 29 for this license term, July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. Information for the next licensing period will be available in March of 2010.

Background:

The Joint Group Licensing Initiative for N.J. Health Sciences Libraries, an Task Force of the Health Sciences Library Association of New Jersey (HSLANJ) and led by the NJHA Library and the University Libraries of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey presented the first group licensing offer on March 19 2002 at the HSLANJ Annual Meeting.

The initiative initially used a survey to determine the interest level in joining a group licensing initiative that would be open to nonprofit health sciences libraries. A standing Committee of the Health Sciences Library Association serves as an advisory group providing expertise for both large and small hospital libraries and helps select resources for group licensing, coordinates vendor product trials and arranges for resource training.
