RSS Help

What's RSS?

Rather than visiting all of your favorite sites a few times a day, you can bring the Web to you!

RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is a term used to describe a new technology that allows for syndication of Web site content. A user subscribes to a content feed, and updates are downloaded automatically using a news reader/aggregator.

Why is it valuable?

Rather than requiring you to visit NJHA's Web site or other Web sites manually and search for what's new or important, RSS "feeds" display in the news reader and shows you a number of headlines or titles with dates in a list format. As new items are added to the top of the list, older items at the bottom of the list drop off. You choose what you are interested in and add those RSS feeds to your news reader. RSS saves a lot of time and is a very efficient way to manage your current awareness needs.

How do I get started?

You subscribe to one or more RSS news feeds using a news reader/aggregator program, most of which are free. Most news readers do not even need to be downloaded; you can quickly set up free access to one via the Web. Typically, you create a log-in and password using any one of a number of popular Web services. The news aggregator automatically and regularly checks feeds to which you've subscribed. When the news changes, the aggregator retrieves the new information and lets you know that updates are available.

For example, if you subscribe to the NJHA Home Page Headlines or New on NJHA.com, your aggregator will check our news feed regularly and bring you any new NJHA news posted on our Web site.

For a podcast there are any number of free programs that you can download to play your podcasts -- itunes and ipodder are the most common.

Where can I download a news reader/aggregator so I can subscribe to the NJHA News Services?

There are many feed readers and news aggregators available for most types of personal computers. Many are free.

What about podcasts? What do I need so I can subscribe to the NJHA President's Advertorial Podcasts?

Do I need to buy an iPod, MP3-player or other hardware or audio-player software to listen? No. You can listen right on your computer. You probably already have the right software on your computer, because most computers arrive bundled with at least one audio- or media-player. If you don't, most media/audio-players are downloadable for free. Here are the Web sites of a few of the most popular audio-players for your computer.

If you do own an iPod or MP3-player, you can later copy, update, transfer or synch the files according to its instructions.

How do I use the RSS feed after I get started?

Near each item you will see an orange text or icon for RSS or Podcast. By right clicking on this, you can copy the shortcut or URL and then paste it into your news reader using its 'subscribe' feature. For podcasts, most software will ask you for the URL of the podcast to which you'd like to subscribe. To provide this, click the orange podcast text or icon and copy the URL that appears at the top.
