Who Can I Call - New Jersey Consumers

New Jersey Consumers:

If you have questions about the HIPAA privacy requirements or believe your rights have been violated, there are several steps you may take:

  1. Visit the Office of Civil Rights Web site at http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/hipaa/ for HIPAA privacy information. The OCR has authority to enforce the HIPAA privacy requirements and investigate complaints.
OCR's comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions search feature allows you to search more than 400 questions to obtain answers to your most pressing questions. Searches may be conducted using key words and phrases, such as "medical records" and "personal representatives," to help you learn more about these and other top issues. Click here to access OCR's FAQ.

  2. If you believe your HIPAA privacy rights have been violated, or if you have a question about a hospital or other healthcare provider's policies, contact the privacy officer or complaint investigator at the facility or organization in question. Information on how to contact the organization is provided in the organization's Notice of Privacy Practices, or simply contact the organization's general information desk. The complaint investigator or privacy officer will respond to questions you may have regarding the facilities' privacy practices and will also address any complaint you may have.
