#StayWellSummer

Summer 2020 is all about enjoying what New Jersey has to offer while also taking care of your health. This resource provides tips from family nurse practitioner Sandy Cayo, RN, DNP, as well as free social media content to promote precautions against coronavirus to make sure we all have a #StayWellSummer.

10 Tips for a #StayWellSummer

  1. Know the guidelines. The CDC provides science-backed information for personal actions you can take to protect yourself and the people around you.
  2. Keep social events outdoors. Droplets we spread when talking or laughing — which is a key way coronavirus spreads – dissipate better in fresh air and open spaces.
  3. At the beach: Follow social distancing both on the sand and in the water. Wear face masks, most importantly at bottlenecks where people gather, like the beach tag kiosk and the boardwalk steps.
  4. At the pool: There is no scientific evidence that coronavirus can be spread in pool water, but there’s also no clear evidence that chlorine kills the virus. That means you have to take the same precautions for social distancing and face masks. If possible, avoid common areas like changing rooms.
  5. If your vacation plans include a hotel or rental, bring disinfectant wipes and use them to swipe down frequently touched items like doorknobs, faucet handles, light switches and the remote control.
  1. Enjoy outdoor dining, but make sure the table arrangements provide plenty of space and that you feel comfortable with the amount of distance between other diners.
  2. If your kids play sports, it’s a good time to focus on drills and skills rather than close contact competition. Also make sure youth teams follow social distancing and disinfect shared equipment.
  3. If your children attend day camp, make sure they understand important health habits like handwashing, wearing a face mask, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding touching your face and respecting other campers’ spaces.
  4. Drink plenty of water and use sunscreen – that advice never goes out of date!
  5. Prioritize good health. And that includes keeping up with doctor’s appointments, health screenings or other healthcare services.
