    This planning tool was developed based on input from stakeholders (PCPs, PCP office managers, hospitals, local and state public health departments, and local and state emergency management agencies) during a CDC-sponsored meeting in August 2009. It is intended to assist PCPs and office managers with preparing their offices for an increase in patient calls and visits, whether during the 2009-2010 influenza season or future influenza seasons.

    On September 8th, 2009 CDC updated its recommendations for the use of influenza antiviral medicines to provide additional guidance for clinicians in prescribing antiviral medicines for treatment and prevention (chemoprophylaxis) of influenza during the upcoming 2009-2010 flu season. These recommendations are intended to help clinicians prioritize use of antiviral drugs for treatment and prevention of influenza.

Companies that provide critical services, such as power and telecommunications, have a special responsibility to their community to plan for continued operations in a pandemic and should plan accordingly.

  • Guidelines for the Submission of Tissue Specimens for the Pathologic Evaluation of Influenza Virus Infections - May 1, 2009
    Viral antigens and nucleic acids may be focal and sparsely distributed in patients with influenza. Larger airways (particularly primary and segmental bronchi) have the highest yield for detection of influenza viruses by IHC staining. In comparison, viral RNA is more commonly detected in lower airways. Collection of the appropriate tissues ensures the best chance of detecting the virus by immunohistochemical stains and PCR tests.
