Background and Introduction

For many years, the content, purpose and scope of healthcare information technology was primarily finance and accounting. Over the last 5-10 years most hospitals and healthcare organizations have invested significant time and money in clinical information systems to optimize efficiency and improve the quality of care. For example, computerized physician order entry and electronic medication administration record systems have shown significant improvements in operational workflow and patient safety. This has enabled clinical leadership an electronic ability to champion and pursue best practice standards. While the clinical information technology paradigm shift within hospitals and health systems has been significant, IT adoption within the non-hospital-based physician community has been a challenge. As a result, those primary care physicians on the front lines of the healthcare continuum of care that are positioned to make timely and significant decisions regarding clinical care, have limited access to a patient's complete health information and more than likely have no access to electronic health information. Simply put, the national e-health initiative is designed to empower patients, their physicians and all their clinical providers with secured access to complete and up-to-date health information. The objective of this site is to collaborate, promote and share e-health related information with the New Jersey healthcare stakeholders. To realize the vision of the New Jersey e-health initiative will take the collaboration, effort, synergy and trust of the entire New Jersey healthcare community.
