Interlibrary Loan Guidelines and Suggestions For Quality Service Common Problems
ILL PoliciesILL Fee Schedule
1. Incomplete citation: An incomplete or incorrect journal title of bibliographic element, which is usually the date.
2."Fishing expeditions": A citation for a title or issues not owned at NJHA.
Suggestions
- With the closing of the Citation/Location Center, librarians are advised to contact local supplemental reference services of their Regional Library Cooperative. For information needs that cannot be answered locally, librarians are directed to contact the Camden County Library (1-800-443-0315) or the New Jersey State Library (609-292-6220) for citation/location assistance.
- You are welcome to call or fax us the incomplete or problem citation prior to sending ILL. We will be glad to assist and consider citations specialized reference requests.
Rationale
- Expedites receipt of document for patron.
- Eliminates DOCLINE routing of erroneous citations.
- Improves efficiency of ILL procedures for lending and receiving library.
3. Journal citation verified as OCLC.
Suggestion
- OCLC verifies location and holdings of journals. It does not verify accuracy of a journal citation (ie. the author, title, source). Therefore, note as "unverified" if other verification sources are not available.
4. Federal Register, or other citations for laws and regulations, state and federal, incompletely cited.
Suggestion
- If you are at all unsure call Angela Harris-Scriven, senior research associate at 609-275-4130. We are happy to assist you.
Rationale
- This type of query is often complex and has several facets that are considered during a reference interview, for which an ILL form does not allow.
5. A patron needs many items, often from a bibliography, and NJHA is the sole source in New Jersey.
Suggestion
- Call us to mediate patrons' needs and delivery times.
Rationale
- We are pleased to assist with such major service demands, and to do so requires advance planning.
