Health Career Scholarships
Previous Award Recipients – 2004

2004 Health Career Scholarship Recipients
October 29, 2004
HRET has been awarding health career scholarships since 1983 as part of its goal of encouraging New Jersey residents to pursue health careers. To date more than $130,000 has been awarded. The scholarships are for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a healthcare program. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be in an accredited health career program, maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or better and demonstrate financial need. This year HRET is pleased to present three awards:

Rena Jaffe is an undergraduate nursing student. She holds as Bachelor of Arts degree in Japanese language and culture and decided she wanted work to combat healthcare inequalities observed while employed in another field in Washington, DC. Rena attends Rutgers College of Nursing and plans to continue her studies to become a Nurse Practitioner. She intends to work in underserved communities as an advocate and clinician. Rena maintains a 4.0 GPA.

Lorraine Martin is a nursing student at Rutgers School of Nursing as well. This is a career change for Lorraine who has a MA in Sociology. Her interest in nursing stems from her thesis project, the wide scope of practice now available to nurses and her experiences while caring for her grandmother. She plans on working as a staff nurse for several years to develop clinical skills in critical care and work towards her advance practice degree. Lorraine maintains a 3.92 grade point average.

Kristine Whitfield is a student at Kean University studying to become an occupational therapist. This, too, is a career change for Kristine who is committed to working with others to help them reintegrate into productive lives. Kristine maintains a 3.75 GPA while working part time to support herself.

"Our industry needs bright and committed young minds to carry on our healthcare system's tradition of caring and excellence, and these three recipients are a fine example of healthcare's future," said Gary Carter, President and CEO of NJHA and HRET.
